WORLD IN CONVERSATION DIALOGUES

Throughout the semester, you need to complete TWO World in Conversation dialogues.

You will be contacted via your Penn State email at a unique point in the semester to register for a dialogue session. Each session lasts 95 minutes and will occur outside of your regular class time. There will be a variety of days and times from which you can choose. In order to receive credit, your attendance will be recorded at the end of the session. And keep in mind: You will not be able to attend the dialogue (or receive credit) if you are more than 5 minutes late.

The majority of these dialogues will occur in person in Pond Lab*.

*There is construction around Osmond Davey Laboratories - if you’re coming from the HUB you must walk on the sidewalk next to Chandlee Laboratory.

Each dialogue is worth 12 points toward your final SOC 119 grade, and because this is an essential part of the course, we want to emphasize that getting an “A” in this class is almost impossible if you don’t complete this assignment.

Keep in mind that:

  • Each dialogue is 95 minutes, and you must be present for the entire period of time.

  • You can only register for ONE dialogue at a time.

  • If you miss a dialogue for which you are registered or arrive late and are not allowed in the room, you will have to make it up.

  • We are planning to have a makeup week near the end of the semester, HOWEVER, you can only make-up ONE dialogue during that week and also, seats are VERY LIMITED so we cannot guarantee you an opportunity to do it.

  • If you are required to have a World in Conversation dialogue for another course, it cannot “double count” for this one and this assignment cannot “double count” for your other course.

If something happens and you miss your dialogue, then communicate with the WinC Staff to re-register for it:  https://worldinconversation.psu.edu/help
If you cannot fit a dialogue in or there are no available seats, then you will probably have an opportunity to make ONE of them up near the end of the semester, but we cannot guarantee you a seat.

YOU CAN ONLY MAKE UP ONE OF TWO REQUIRED DIALOGUES AND WE CANNOT GUARANTEE ENOUGH SEATS NEAR THE END OF THE SEMESTER.

Let us say that again: Near the end of the semester, we cannot have unlimited dialogues available for people to attend. As such, there will be competition for the seats available for make-up groups, and you might not get registered. Our best advice is that you do not slack on this assignment, or you will be in dire straits at the end of the term.

World in Conversation Dialogue Schedule for SOC 119:

All dates are approximate and subject to change.

In each block, the class is split into three groups by people’s first names:

  • Group two: First names that begin with F - M will have dialogues between September 18 - October 1

**Some of you may have the chance to schedule a global dialogue during Block 2 – meaning that students from countries such as Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq, Colombia, Brazil, and Russia will be in the dialogues with you. Because you are connecting with students around the world, these specific global dialogues occur on Zoom, which you will see on the registration site.

If you have any questions or issues regarding your World in Conversation account, scheduling, or about the dialogues themselves, please contact the WinC team by filling out the help form at https://worldinconversation.psu.edu/help and someone will get back to you within 24 hours.

REMEMBER, YOU MIGHT ALSO BE REQUIRED TO HAVE A WinC DIALOGUE IN ANOTHER CLASS BESIDES SOC 119.

YOU CANNOT DOUBLE COUNT.
