We are recruiting TWELVE people who are enrolled in the Fall 2024 semester of SOC 119 for a semester-long conversation focused on the social and political issues that all of us will be dealing with in the fall. The conversations will be facilitated by Professor Laurie Mulvey. They will be filmed and edited into short videos, and then published on the World in Conversation platforms and be available for public viewing on the WinC YouTube channel.

This opportunity is for you if you have ever thought the following:

“It would be cool to talk with people who have very different opinions about controversial issues and have someone in the room manage the discussion so that it is productive and I can say exactly what I am thinking and know that I will be heard.”

TIME COMMITMENT: 75 minutes per week (this is a 2.0 credit opportunity)

You might have some questions:

Q. Do I have to be knowledgeable about issues?
A. No. You just have to be curious.

Q. Do I have to be enrolled in a particular major?
A. No.

Q. Are some perspectives and opinions going to be supported more than others?
A. Absolutely not. We want a wide range of opinions from all over the ideological spectrum.

Q. What if these conversations devolve into arguments?
A. Dr. Mulvey (aka: the Doctor of Dialogue) is a masterful facilitator who will ensure that these are productive, respectful, and interesting conversations.

Q. Are there exams, readings, or other assignments?
A. We might ask you to read a few short articles or watch a few short videos, but there are no exams, quizzes, or written assignments.

Q. Can I be an international student?
A. Yes.

Q. When will the group be meeting?
A. There are FOUR possible days/times that this class will meet. Either Tuesday or Thursday and from either 12:05 - 1:20pm or 1:35 - 2:50pm (When you apply, you can tell us which days/times work for you.)

Q. Why are these conversations being filmed?
A. This group is an extension of SOC 119 except that with this class, we are highlighting Dr. Mulvey’s facilitation methodology and we are publishing segments of the footage on World in Conversation platforms (e.g., the WinC YouTube Channel) for educational and promotional purposes.

Q. Will I receive class credit?
